Is this the worst save ever awarded?
The Cubs' Sean Gallagher was awarded a save today, after entering the game with a 9-0 lead. After my double-take, I had to race back to the definition of a save opportunity to understand how this one happened. I was aware of #1 and #2 below, but I'd never heard of #3:
"Save opportunities. When a pitcher 1) enters the game with a lead of three or fewer runs and pitches at least one inning, 2) enters the game with the potential tying run on base, at bat, or on deck, or 3) pitches three or more innings with a lead and is credited with a save by the official score"
Who is the "offical scorer" who made this decision? A 9-0 lead seems so out of place for a save opportunity to be awarded. Any ideas why?
BTW, it looks like it was a great pitching performance, but since Zambrano left after the fifth, he clearly was awarded with the win... perhaps the save was awarded, because somebody thought the performance was worthy of *some* special stat... hence the save???
Too tell you the truth, I value the three-inning save more than I do the normal 9th inning pitching. It reminds me of the time before Tony LaRussa changed the way a bullpen was used.
Until he started using Dennis Eckersley in just the 9th inning it was normal for a closer to pitch two or three innings to finish a game.
To answer your question about the official scorer, it is normally one of the baseball writer's that is assigned to the game. This person makes the determination about relief pitcher wins and saves plus errors vs hits. The official rule is that a save MAY be awarded but it is not mandatory; it is common practice to award the save for three innings of effective relief pitching as long as the pitcher is the last one in the game for the winning team.
