Is Lou Gehrig regarded as the best first baseman in the history of baseball?
or was it Babe Ruth? Or was Lou Gehrig exceptionally good at another position/job.
Although the Babe did play, other than pitching, several games at firsr base in1917 (13) and a few other times (19),in other seasons.He was soon switched to the outfield to take advantage of his superior running speed and his tremendous throwing ability.
Gehrig was always a first baseman and is regarded as the greatest first baseman of all time. Gehrig was quite athletic and was a better than average fielder.
This is just an aside: Foxx rates at number two. He played on some very high scoring Philadelphia Athletics and Boston Redsox teams, so somebody was getting on base ahead of Foxx. His RBI numbers are far from shoddy.
