Baseball Cards
What brand of baseball cards are the best as far as investment?
My son wants to start collecting baseball cards as a hobby which I fully support. I was curious which brand of cards are better? I see they have a few different brands, ie. Topps, Donross and Upperdeck
The only cards worth as an investment are vintage baseball cards. Pre -1970's. They never go down in value and are getting rarer to find every year.
That said you would be very disappointed if you only collecting baseball cards for an investment. You almost never recoup you cost of a box. The value of cards have been plummeting. With eBay there will always be more seller than buyers. Of course you can be lucky and get a once in the lifetime hit but you shouldn't count on it. You should only collect for the fun of it.
But I do have some advice. Never buy any cards from the 1980's or 1990's. Cards were overproduced in this era and they are absolutely worthless.
Some products to consider:
I don't know how well your son knows baseball cards but you can try minor league products. It is best bet for investment purpose of the products today and it is fun to collect. You save/store the cards of these minor leagues and hope the make it big. Of course, you probably won't recognized most of the players right away so there won't be a connection with the cards especially for kids. The best minor league products include Razor, Donruss Threads, Bowman, Just Minors.
Of the big two left, Topps has the most tradition so it has the best value. Soon Upper Deck will lose and Donruss lost the MLB license so Topps would be the only licensed product out there. For the record I never like the factory set. I think they are way overcosted and plummet in value the next year. If you want to buy factory sets, try waiting.
Finally I suggest Allen and Ginter. This is best product right now. It is fun to collect, has great hits and great inserts.
