How do baseball contracts work?
Let's say I am a high school superstar shortstop. I'm the #1 rated baseball player in the country, at any position. They say I'm the next A-Rod, Jeter. Whatever.
So, at this point, I actually have no idea how the MLB draft works. Is it lottery like the NBA or based upon record as the NFL?
If say, the Braves sign me, do I first go play for their AAA in Gwinnett, the AA in Rome and are they paying me what an NBA or NFL superstar rookie would make or what?
Jeter wasn't regarded like that (but A-Rod was already a household name).
Besides that, you'll be drafted by a horrid team---you cannot trade draft picks in MLB. There are rules about signing FA and losing your pick but it'll never happen to the #1 so I won't confuse you with that.
You go where the team puts you, which in your case would be Low A (yes, Rome) after a very short Gulf Coast stint. The Braves try to avoid Myrtle Beach (High A) with hitters since it's a pitching paradise, but if Rome doesn't go well you'll start your 2nd season at MB in High A-ball. If you end up in AAA it means you're either being wasted by the organization or you're a bust. AA is where all the talent is advancing, so a great year in either A-ball affiliate will send you to AA Mississippi. Tear it up there and you'll be on the MLB roster in September. Gwinnett is death to prospects, so have a good Spring when you're 21 and hope a position is open.
Long story short, make it to AA and tear it up (any organization). You will get a huge signing bonus---I'm just telling you your major league time line. 3 years and no AAA is the ticket.
