Batting Gloves Game
anybody remember a game called "strikeout"? (similar to stickball)?
if you're from the chicago area, and you love baseball, you probably know about it....you only needed two players, there was no running of bases, and you drew a "strike zone" on a wall (typically the side of a school, or apartment building) you could play with/without a glove, a bat, and a sponge rubber ball, which made the most amazing "pop" sound if you got good wood on it. depending on the landscaping, anything ball hit past you (the pitcher) on the ground was a single, then you had to designate the "zones" for doubles, triples, and homeruns. in my neighborhood, a home run was always across the street on the fly. from age 9-16, I played this game almost everyday during spring/summer months. broke a few windows too!! anyone out there have memories of this game? if you do, please share...thanks!
we used white spray paint on the southside...some of my boxes are still there too!!!
I 'm from Chicago too. We played the game pretty much the way you did it, but would sometimes play 2 a side - you'd have an outfielder. We called it "fast pitch".We would even let the outfielder throw the runner at home out on a fly ball - The hitter would have to yell tag, and once the outfielder caught the ball, the defense would have 3 seconds (1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi, 3 Mississippi -counted by the hitter) to hit the strike zone with a throw (either the OF could hit it, or he could relay to the pitcher to try to throw the runner out).
Other then that, we played it the same way.
The funniest thing was that for a while all of the schools here would send the custodian out to try to erase our strike zone from the wall, or paint over it, but usually they'd give up. I think some of the strike zones we pointed 30-35 years ago are still there.
