Honeymoons get very short as baseball season moves along. There is that open, cheery optimism of Opening Day and then the stat machines start churning. Already, multiple ballplayers are getting punished from the media and fans alike. Unless they turn their struggles around, it could be a very long, ugly season. Check out these five players under the microscope on satellite TV.
1. Carlos Lee. Panama's slugging ‘Caballo' has definitely gotten off to the worst start of his career in 2010 and the results aren't pretty. Playing in Houston has always meant playing behind franchise player Lance Berkman. Unfortunately for El Caballo, Berkman's injury has left the struggling behemoth on his own. Coupling that with the Astros' horrendous performance early on and you have a number of people wondering just what $19 million buys you these days. Lee can feel the heat.
2. A.J. Pierzynski. The man most ballplayers love to hate has begun to draw the ire of his own fan base as well as the legions already lined up against him. Even though, as Ozzie Guillen has said, "You hate A.J. less when you're on his team," the fans are not seeing the humor in Pierzynski's atrocious returns. After fifteen games, 1 RBI and 0 HR are appalling figures. Fans prefer not to look at his sub-.200 batting average for now. 3. David Ortiz. Damaging steroid test results may haunt Boston's formerly feared slugger forever, but fans just want a few dingers out of Big Papi these days. Flailing at pitches right down the middle and popping up everything he puts in play, Ortiz is a mess of hitting mechanics. His patience with newshounds is growing thin as well, but there's no way the onslaught will stop until he starts hitting bombs. Watch the tension rise on the Boston NESN HD network.
4. Alfonso Soriano. Fonzi has always been known for his winning smile and uncanny power ever since he made up the second half of the Yankees' double play tandem. After some dark days, his humongous contract with the Cubs has been – like many things in recent memory with the Cubs – an unqualified bust. With Manager Lou Piniella wondering if he should bench Soriano outright, it has gotten very ugly in the windy city. 5. Jason Bay. Signing a big contract on a new sports team always means a lot of pressure, but signing a contract with the New York Mets is inadvisable unless you come ready to play. With the organization in a virtual freefall, Bay's slump couldn't have come at a worse time. Boo birds are never far from Citi Field's stands, so watch Bay start to hear Bronx cheers from the crowd if his bat doesn't start speaking for him.
