Why hasn't a big league manager done this?
Lets say you are the visiting team (Mets) and your pitcher (John Maine) pitched last night, went 6 strong innings. He obviously will not be used for todays game. Why don't managers put him to bat 9th and IF you get to that 9th spot then sub a pinch-hitter to really try to break the game open? If you get to that spot you will have at least 4/5 runs. You are not going to use Maine anyway so he will be removed for the bottom of the inning. I know the chance of the Mets getting to that point are slim, but still. Why is this not done almost every game by the visiting club?
Because it's against the rules. The pitcher must pitch to at least one batter until that batter completes his plate appearance.
