The earliest baseball sets were produced by four different tobacco companies in 1887. The Allen & Ginter World Champions set (N28) is generally acknowledged as the first significant tobacco set issued. Ten baseball players are included in the set, which also depicts six other sports.

The first set that would have included a player for the franchise currently known as the New York Yankees would have been in 1909 when they were still known as the Highlanders. There were two tobacco companies making sets beginning that year.
Here is a card of New York player, Charlie Hemphill from one set (T204) in 1909 This would probably be considered the first Yankee baseball card. This was the only Highlander in the set of 55. This set was issued during the 1909 season.
