Carl Yastrzemski Boston

Is Manny Ramirez "the best ever to play left field in Boston"?
Manny certainly seems to think so.
http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/50116
I once heard of these two guys who were supposed to be pretty good back in the day, Ted Williams and Carl Yastrzemski.
What do you think: truth, Manny being Manny, or Manny being an arrogant jackass?
Ramirez is a great player and a feared hitter, no doubt.
But I still think that sliced bread was a pretty damn good invention.
Manny is so hilarious. In my opinion, it is hard for anybody to pass Teddy BallGame. I grew up a Red Sox fan in the 70's and 80's--Ted Williams is a secular God where I come from. I still argue he is the best pure hitter in the history of the game, and he revolutionized the way major league hitters prepare.
But Manny is nearly as dedicated a student of hitting as Williams was. It's a big myth that Manny is just some super-talented space case who just shows up and rakes line drives all over the park. He is a true hitting scientist. He's going to hit 600 bombs before he finishes. When you combine power and average, he probably is the best pure, all-around hitter of his era. He is kind of a right handed Ted Williams.
But Williams would have hit six hundred homeruns, too, if he hadn't taken off five prime seasons for WWII and Korea--he probably would have had seven hundred. And his .344 average for a power-hitter is absolutely untouched. The only players with higher all-time averages were hitters from the dead ball era.
Yaz is the best defensive left-fielder all-time for the Sox. He was a gold glover. I think he won a gold glove one season in Centerfield, as well. He was the hero of my boyhood. But even adjusting for eras, I don't rate him quite on a par with Manny as a hitter.
Manny is not an arrogant jackass. He is an all-time great and feels confidence in himself. He didn't grow up as a Sox fan, viewing the likes of the Splinter and Yaz as Sainted figures. They are co-Hall-of-Famers for Manny--his peers in immortality. As a great athlete, it is natural for him to believe he is the best.
I rank Red Sox left-fielders as follows: 1. Williams 2. Manny 3. Yaz 4. Rice. Not a bad quartet.

It had already been one of the most remarkable years in baseball history, but the moment Bucky Dent's seemingly harmless fly ball cleared the Green Monster at Fenway Park on the afternoon of October 2, the 1978 season became, what some people still consider today, the most dramatic in the sport's glorious lineage... |
