Detroit Lions Tickets- Winless Record Causes Frustration
The Detroit Lions are inching week by week to become what no team has before: 0-16. As going down in history as the league's worst team ever looms, players are starting to get frustrated. The Lions cut cornerback Brian Kelly, who has been obviously frustrated as his lack of playing time. He has Leigh Bodden, Travis Fisher and Kalvin Pearson to compete with and hasn't been getting much field time. Frustration also led center Dominic Raiola to make an obscene gesture towards Lions fans, who were jeering him after the Lions' loss to the Minnesota Vikings during week 14. The gesture got Raiola slapped with a $7,500 fine from the Lions. This year marked Kelly's first with the Lions, but he had previously worked with coach Rod Marinelli when Marinelli was the defensive line coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Detroit signed him to a three-year deal back in March. He spent 10 years with the Buccaneers before he came to the Lions. During his time with the Bucs, he tallied 429 tackles, 22 interceptions, two forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries and 118 passes defended. He started and played in every game during three of his seasons with the Bucs, and had started in 11 games during his season with the Lions before he started sitting in favor of other players. Cornerback Dexter Wynn was signed as a replacement for Kelly.
When asked about his middle-finger gesture toward fans, Raiola said that he wouldn't take the gesture back if he could. He also said that Lions fans pick him and other longtime Detroit players out during games as the cause of the slump since they have been in Detroit throughout the decline. Raiola has been with the Lions since the 2001 season and has started in every regular season game with the Lions other than his rookie season. The Lions drafted him in the second round of the 2001 draft as the 50th pick overall. Raiola is currently second in consecutive stars for a center in his time period, behind Denver center Casey Wiegman. He signed a five-year extension with the Lions in 2005. With the kind of stats Raiola has, the Lions fans will probably have to deal with seeing more of him and Raiola will have to deal with fans unhappy about a difficult string of seasons.
As of week 14, the Lions are 0-13. They came close to wins many times, like a 12-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings during week 6 and again against the Vikings during week 14 when the Lions were up late in the game only to lose 20-16. If they are looking not to set the all-time losing record, their schedule will not make it easy. They are up against the 9-4 Indianapolis Colts during week 15 followed by the 7-6 New Orleans Saints the next week. Their best bet may be the last game of the season against the 5-8 Green Bay Packers.
