What do you think of the Cincinnati Reds signing Francisco Cordero?
My first reaction is probably the same as many Reds fans - it's nice to see the Reds loosening the purse strings, and hopefully this is the first of several moves to be made.
Cordero is a successful closer, and it will help the bullpen. David Weathers filled in admirably, but the fact is that he's just not that good in the closing role. They can now use him and Jared Burton in setup roles, and take some pressure off the other middle relievers. That's been a sore spot the past couple of seasons, and it would be good to get another arm in that group.
The Reds should still make a decision soon regarding Adam Dunn. Either trade him now while he has some serious value as a high-OBP, power hitting guy, or lock him up long-term. I know he'd be expensive, but he could hit a ton of homers at GAB if they kept him. He could be moved, though, for some much-needed young starters. Adding another young guy in the rotation with Homer Bailey could give this team some hope for the future.
The Cordero signing doesn't make the Reds contenders, but it's a nice first step and an encouraging sign.
