Possibly Getting Sued by Creditor, what are my options?
I have not received an official notice from a creditor or the court, but I got several letters in the mail from cracker-jack legal services saying a lawsuit had been filed in my county against me and they offer Chapter 7 and 13 services to get me out of it.
I did have a business card left on my door from the county Marshall but did not say in what it is in regards to and I was served no official papers. I have not received any official papers/documents or notice from the creditor or the court about a lawsuit and there are no court records on file right now for me at the county courthouse, I checked yesterday after getting the card from the Marshall.
If I am being sued, I have to get an official notice from the court first, correct? If so, once I get that notice, do I have options to settle with the creditor before it goes to court? I really am not sure what it is even for as the only cards I have that went to collections were paid off or charged off years ago.
Generally a creditor will send you around twenty bills (some with demand letters), and call you at least that many times before they file a civil suit. And that's if you just ignore them. If you string them along, it can go on for a year.
And then, yes, you'll get a summons in the mail (from small claims) or from a process server.
This letter, I'm afraid, is a mailer from a very unscrupulous law firm. They probably sent the same letter to your entire neighborhood. They're taking advantage of this poor economy to scare people into soliciting their business. If I were you, I'd send a copy of their mailer to both the Better Business Bureau and the state Bar Association with your complaint.
It wouldn't hurt, especially at this point, for your peace of mind 
, to check your credit reports. It's possible there's some mistake or fraud on your report. You can fix that, usually, out of court. Do that for free here:

Oh, and unless you're a criminal (which I'm sure you're not! just call the Marshall on the card. Since s/he just left a card, s/he probably just want to know if you're a witness to something or if you've seen your bail-jumping cousin lately ... 
And if it does have something to do with some kind of fraudulent credit used; the Marshall can help you with that.
