No Yankee has 3,000 hits?
Does this come as a shock to anyone that Derek Jeter is now the all-time Yankee hit leader.... with 2,722 hits??? I understand Lou Gehrig had to cut his career short, but how can no other Yankee (Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth) not have 3,000 hits?
I've known that for a long time so it's not a shock to me.
If you think about it, the Yanks of recent decades have rarely had a great hitter for his entire career, so that rules out that period.
And there were only about 12 players in the 3,000 hit club prior to free agency. It is a pretty lofty achievement.
Historically, the Yankee greats have all had barriers to getting 3,000 hits. Gehrig was forced out due to illness, as you said. DiMaggio lost 4 prime seasons to WWII and also retired early due to injuries. Ruth had 6 seasons in Boston as a pitcher and walked a hell of a lot, so didn't get close to 3,000. Mantle also walked a lot and had leg injuries that had him retired early.
So, it's really not that surprising when you think about it.
BTW, considering Jeter's career, consider this: He has more hits in fewer at bats than Pete Rose did at the same age with far more homers and walks than Rose. Can Jeter pass Rose on the career hit list? Very unlikely, I realize but not impossible if he wants to play another 10 years like Rose.
