Why aren't my sunflowers growing up?...just out?
I've grown a lot of plants in my life, and it's just my luck that I screw up the one that's supposed to be easy to manage. I started my sunflowers from seeds. About 20 germinated, 12 sprouted, and maybe 4 died. I planted them on the west side of my house about a week ago (i live in NC so they get a good 7-9 hours of hot sun every day).
My stems aren't very strong and all of my plants wilt toward the west and crawl on the ground (rather than stand upright) as they mature. I might have overwatered them for the first two days after planting them. I can't figure out why they won't grow up.
What should I do?
(by the way, the types I'm growing are the: "honey bear", "citrus", and "cutting gold" varieties)
Maybe if you wrap them around some posts for a while and then pull the posts out they will grow straight up.
This is what we do with our tomato and cucumber plants.
