When writing a story, is swearing necessary to realistically display anger?
I write a lot, and I've always had this problem. I don't swear, but I can't stand instances in books where really goofy "swear" words like "oh my goodness" are used in a case where that would totally wouldn't be. These authors do these kinds of things because they don't want to swear. But I want to be realistic. At the same time, I have to ask myself if it's really necessary. I would prefer to make my books appropriate for all age groups, but is there a better way to do this? I need some advice.
In most of the books I read, instead of actually printing the swear, the author will just say that the character swore. If a character is upset and wants to just shout out a word, you can say "Joe swore loudly" etc, and if it's part of a discussion or a speech, you can describe it as "peppered with expletives" or something along those lines. If your writing is narrated in first person, the narrator can explain that they have "paraphrased" or "removed certain words which [they] do not choose to repeat". You also have the option of not printing the swear, but using the first sound and a series of dashes to make it obvious which word the character is using, like "F-- you" or "the whole world's gone to sh--". Another way is to have the characters interrupted in the middle of a swear or just before using a swear.
Keep in mind the relationships between the characters who are together in your scene. In my life, I've had plenty of very loud, angry arguments with my parents in which I did not swear, and been angry with children, or in front of strangers, where I needed to control my language. It depends on the character whether or not they would choose to express themselves that way. It's certainly not necessary, but if you feel it would be right for your character to use a certain type of language, then include it and if a publisher has a problem with it, they can have an editor work with you on it later.
