Congrats to Amir Khan on his thorough thrashing of Paulie Malignaggi Saturday night. I expected Khan to be the stronger fighter, and I wasn't even surprised by his hand speed. What did surprise me was how easily he dominated a fighter who is normally very elusive. Part of Khan's success can be attributed to Malignaggi being past his prime and ready for retirement. But a bigger reason for his success is trainer Freddie Roach. Khan is a much improved fighter since joining forces with Roach . . . Expect Khan to land a big fight by year's end . . .
A very disturbing, but informative, article in yesterday's NY Daily News about drugs and the NFL. The anonymous athlete who wrote the piece had this to say about what Spring means to the NFL: training for mini-camps; the appearance of rookies and free-agents; and "players hav[ing] to take a break from their favorite street drug of choice to avoid getting put in the NFL Drug program." Read it . . .

Twas a nightmarish Sunday for the Yankees. After getting five solid innings from Sergio Mitre and jumping out to a 3-1 lead, the boys from the Bronx seemed destined to sweep the Minnesota Twins. Destined that is until Joba Chamberlain entered the game in the eighth inning. Chamberlain gave up two hits and walked a batter, forcing manager Joe Girardi to bring in Mariano Rivera to preserve the lead. But instead of protecting the lead, Rivera imploded. It happens about as often as the arrival of Haley's Comet, but it does happen, and today was that day. Rivera walked Jim Thome with the bases loaded to cut the lead to 3-2, and then surrendered a grand slam to Jason Kubel to put the Yanks behind for good. It was ugly, but it was also just an anomaly--at least Rivera's meltdown was. Chamberlain's collapse is a recurring event . . .
The Yankees two biggest rivals, the Red Sox and the Mets, had similarly brutal Sundays. The Red Sox lost again to the Tigers, giving Detroit the weekend series. The Mets somehow managed to get swept in their four-game series against the mighty Marlins. Sunday's loss gave the Mets sole possession of last place in the NL East . . .
The Tigers are 5-2 in their last seven games, which were against the Yankees and the Red Sox. . .
We are still two weeks away from the Memorial Day weekend and the Baltimore Orioles are already 14 1/2 games out of first place . . .
Los Angeles Dodger Andre Ethier is on fire, leading the National League in the Triple Crown categories of Batting Average, Home Runs, and RBIs . . . Speaking of the Dodgers, Joe Torre's club has certainly picked the perfect time to get hot. LA swept the NL West leading Padres to stretch their winning streak to seven games . . .
The Blue Jays have very quietly crept to within two games of the second-place Yankees in the AL East . . .
Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli is a good hitter who will be a solid catcher in the very near future, but someone on the Yankee's bench needs to advise him about his batting helmet. That hat is so big he looks like The Great Gazoo from The Flintstones . . .
