Who do you believe is the most overrated Pitcher of all time?
For me, I gotta go with Nolan Ryan. I'm not saying he's not a hall of famer, because he definately is, it's just when the question of "best pitcher ever" comes up, a lot of People say Nolan Ryan and he never even was a Cy Young award winner, so at no point was he even considered the best pitcher in his own league and his career record was barely above .500 at 324-292
so who do you think? and why?
Art- I agree. I'm not saying that Nolan Ryan isn't a top 15-20 pitcher of all time..because he is. What i'm saying is he isn't close to the best ever...and many people think he is. In that sense I believe he's overrated.
While I can't really argue too much with Nolan Ryan (He was great, but he certainly is vastly overrated), I have to bring up the pitchers from the dead ball era. All of them are heralded for being workhorses, for their amazing innings pitched and games won.
And that's a line of crap. Don't get me wrong, these pitchers were great in their day, but to compare them positively to modern pitchers is like comparing cavalry with tanks. One was great in its day, but a joke if you put them up side by side. So for my money, Walter Johnson and Cy Young are the most overrated pitchers of all-time. They played when pitching was a joke; even in their own day it was a joke. Charles Radbourne, who holds the record for most wins in a season once laughed when asked about his achievement because he spent the offseason killing cows in a slaughterhouse, and that was real work. Today's pitchers put more stress on their arm, than any sledge-hammer swinging slaughterhouse worker. It's a different game, and these are different men. You can remember the past heroes with fondness, but they are not equivalent to the players of today.
