A handful of very notable rookies have started their career unhittable. Names like FERNANDO VALENZUELA and CAREY WOOD are just a couple of names that come to mind.
STEVE AVERY was a rookie that certainly blossomed beautifully by the end of his first season
There are certainly other names to throw in to the mix
But Pittsburgh Pirate Tim Wakefield did not even get his first start until it was almost August. July 31 to be exact.
He was ABSOLUTELY,POSITIVELY UNHITTABLE not only through the last half of the season but even more impressively in the CLUTCH GAMES of the NLCS against the mighty BRAVES!

Has any Rookie over the last 20 years that began his carees LATER IN THE SEASON been anything close to the 26 year old KNUCKLEBALLING WIZARD Wakefield?

I remember that time. I was blown away by this kid who threw funny.
He has been around a very long time and he is one of the great ambassadors of baseball.
I feel very fortunate that he has played so long with our beloved Red Sox.
