Stamp and first day cover on the first day of issue - which one is valuable in the long term?

Go to a professional philatelist and ask to see catalogues listing mint stamps and FDCs. Usually the First Day Covers are more expensive than mint - and these are more expensive than cancelled stamps.
However, because the FDCs are a lot bigger than the stamps, the FDC albums are a lot more expensive than the stamp albums (for mint or cancelled).
Otherwise, I recommand you collect just mint and FDCs. You'll have the best deal if you subscribe to your country's General Post Office, Philatelic Bureau. Then you'll get the mint and the cancelled stamps - FDCs carry the cancelled stamps stuck on them (leave them on the FDC-enverlopes!) - in the best quality condition ever.
Perhaps you concentrate on collecting for pleasure and educational purposes. You hardly make money, and certainly it doesn't cover the person/hours you used in all your efforts to make your collection presentable. Only the professional at auctions make any worthwhile money.
