Reliable source for ballistic information?
In a recent question regarding the 300 RUM vs the 300 Wby mag, someone suggested my numbers were off or that Guns and Ammo's tables were wrong.
My refrence of choice is "Cartridges of the World" 10th edition, by the late, great Frank C. Barnes, a legend amongst shooters.
I haven't bought any G&A for a while, but they always seemed very add driven, and I have always been somewhat suspicious of Weatherby's numbers (note they use a longer barrel than most for test numbers) Few people can actually get chrono figures that Wby claims. I really prefer when I can get data from a neutral source. I don't think a single manufacturer of a proprietary cartridge is an unbiased source. I also don't think most gun rags are unbiased either. BUT, I haven't done anyhing beyond flip throug them lately.
So, Whose info do you trust more Frank C Barnes or Guns & Ammo?
Are there some magazines that rise above the regular rag?
What other refrence books do you find stellar?
Very good question. I don't trust any of them. I have found factory ballistics very optimistic, and gun magazines are also suspect. I have found that in the case of my .22 Hornet, the factory shells were 200 fps slower than published by Winchester when checked over my chronograph.
I beg to differ, 200 fps is a huge difference when you rely on that as being gospel and sight your rifle in accordingly. With the type of predator hunting I do, that much deviation in velocity can mean the difference in hitting a coyote's vitals at 250 yards, missing, or worse yet, wounding.
Even reloading manuals are suspect, as I have never gotten the published velocities when checking over my chrono and using close to what the book quotes as to the powder/bullet combo.
The best advice is to trust nothing, and check all over a chronograph if you can, as that is the only way to really know.
