Commemorate coins (or minnesmynt in Sweden) are issued with a motive of remembrance for the lifetime of a particular event or maybe an important issue. They are the souvenirs to that event. Their popularity is increasing and people have started collecting commemorative coins for various purposes including:

The first of the commemorative coins were issued some 2000 thousand years back. The earliest known example is of a Roman emperor Philip the Arab from the mid of 200's. He announced to publish a series of coins at the event of the anniversary of Rome in the year 1000. Roman commemorative coins often referred to military victories and stories of defeat of enemies. This is an example of ancient propaganda of politics. The first Sweden commemorative coins were minted in 1721 during the reign of Frederick. These coins were issued in the memory of King Gustav Vasa's war for liberation. Since then, 70 different commemorative coins have been issued in Sweden. Most of them were issued to commemorate the events of the royal families.
Many of important commemorate mynt have been issued after 1960s.
Each coin is a distinct piece of art because each new coin symbolizes a unique event. In most of the countries, these coins are for collection purpose, but some countries also circulate them for regular financial dealings.
Commemorate coins are broadly subdivided into three categories as per their utility:
1. Regular coins
Normal monetary valued coins that are used for day-to-day transactions. The same design is seen on the coin for a very long period.
2. Circulating commemorative coins
These limited edition coins are issued to acknowledge a specific event. The designs on these coins are not for very long time.
3. Non-circulating legal tenders
These are generally made of gold or silver meant to be stored as souvenirs. Though they have a legal tender attached to them but they are not used for this purpose.
Countries issue these coins to depict their current economic conditions, art and culture and the use of technology by that country. They are of historical interest.
