What makes the career HR record so hallowed?
Outfield wall dimensions are different from park to park. Some have HIGH walls, some are small... some have DEEP sections, some have shallow.
Willie Mays played games in a park where the centerfield wall was 480 feet from home plate. Ted Williams played in a park where right feild wall was 3 ft. high and 314 ft. from home.
YET, 1,000 yards in football is ALWAYS 1,000 yards. be it in Denver, Miami, or Chicago!
In the NBA, the 3 pt. line is at the SAME distance on every court!
John McEnroe played on a court the exact same size as Jimmy Conners, and every court was the same size no matter where they went.
I think Pete Rose's hit total (4,256) and Joe DiMaggio's hit streak (56) are BOTH FAR more important than 756 career HRs.
So, I ask KNOWLEDGEABLE baseball fans why the CAREER HR record is so sacrosanct??? Or is this just merely another media creation?
I agree that it is because of Babe Ruth holding the initial record for such a long time. Also, Americans (especially males) are infatuated with collecting, or in the case of career home runs, amassing things. The career home run record is the ultimate example of collecting. It took Hank Aaron 24 years of "collecting" in order to surpass Babe Ruth. Ruth has been larger than life for over 100 years, therefor so have his records. For 75 years, baseball fans have been saying "this is the person that could break Ruth's record" yet only two people have done it. From WWII up through the 1980's baseball was truelly the American pasttime and the longer the record went unbroken, the more hallowed it became. DiMaggio's hit streak is probably the most difficult record to break, but was done only over 56 games, whereas the career home run record takes over 20 years to accumulate. Also, and I don't know who it's more important to, fans or players, but the emphasis of the homerun record is much more reknown and studied than somebody that hits in 56 straight games. On the other hand, I do believe that if someone ever hit in 45 straight games, the media attention would be intense leading up to the 56th or 57th game. As for the all-time hits record a slap single isn't nearly as exciting as a home run, and Pete Rose left a scar on his name by gambling on baseball. Also, the person that held the record prior to Rose was Ty Cobb. Cobb was a great player, but players, teammates and media all hated him, so his record was somewhat forgotten because he was such a jerk. To sum it up, that is my opinion on why the Home Run Record is more hallowed than any other in sports.
