Why don't foreign athletes enter the major league baseball draft?
I recently heard Aroldis Chapman signed with the Cincinnati Reds. Why don't foreign athletes like Chapman go through the draft, to the more weak teams? In this system, players like Chapman generally sign with the teams with the most money, making the weaker teams even weaker.
The NBA does this, many athletes have never participated in the NCAA basketball schools such as Yao Ming, Ricky Rubio, and others have entered the draft and picked by weaker teams.
So why is the MLB this way?
They're just not eligible. I couldn't find any reasoning for this, but I assume that it has something to do with the draft having been started in 1965 As there wasn't a lot of talent back then outside the US and they probably didn't want to clog the draft with late round foreign picks that wouldn't perform. That's just an assumption though.
There have been talks lately about opening up the First-Year Player Draft to foreign players, and I believe it's one of Bud Selig's top priorities before he retires in 2012.
Just remember that baseball is a sport very set in it's ways.
