MLB Tickets – Surprise Starters
Let's take a look at some starting pitchers who have been pleasant surprises for their respective teams through the first month or so of the 2010 MLB season.
Barry Zito, San Francisco Giants: Zito has failed to live up to the lofty expectations in the Bay that came with the $126 million contract he signed a few years back, but he's off to a great start in 2010. He's 5-0 through six starts with a tidy 1.49 ERA and, perhaps more importantly, a WHIP under 1.00. Zito could be returning to form this season, as he was a Cy Young winner in Oakland, which could make the Giants a very dangerous team. With a resurgent Zito, Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain and Jonathan Sanchez, San Fran would have the best rotation in the majors.
Matt Garza, Tampa Bay Rays: Garza has emerged as an early candidate for the American League Cy Young. At 5-1 through six starts, Garza has been dominant in each of his starts this season, save one. He's been going deep into games and flashing the kind of stuff that sells MLB tickets. Garza is leading a Tampa Bay staff that has looked great thus far.
Phil Hughes, New York Yankees: Hughes has been dominant in several starts this season and could finally be realizing all the potential that he's flashed in the past. He's 3-0 through four starts and has a 1.44 ERA. That's just nasty.
Ubaldo Jimenez, Coloroado Rockies: Jimenez has been the best pitcher in baseball for far in 2010. He pitched a no-hitter on April 17 and is 6-0 with a 0.87 ERA through six starts. He's looked unhittable at times and fanned 13 batters on May 3.
David Price, Tampa Bay Rays: After a rocky 2009 season, his first as an MLB starter, Price had lost some of the sizzle he'd garnered with his postseason performance in 2008. The former top prospect has been sharp in 2010, though, boasting a 3-1 record and 2.34 ERA through five starts. He's got the potential to become an elite pitcher.
Wade Davis, Tampa Bay Rays: Davis won the final spot in the rotation this spring. He's been a bit inconsistent, but that's to be expected. What probably was not expected was the sub-3.00 ERA he's sporting through five starts. Tampa Bay is looking really, really scary this season.
Francisco Liriano, Minnesota Twins: Liriano was downright atrocious last season, but he appears to be returning to his 2006 form. He looks like a genuine staff ace through five starts, boasting a 4-0 record and a microscopic 1.50 ERA. If Liriano can continue his dominance for the entire season, it vastly changes the landscape of the A.L. Central.
John Danks, Chicago White Sox: Danks has always been solid, but he's been downright filthy this season. He's striking out more batters than usual in 2010, which is probably the reason he's got a 1.85 ERA through five starts. The White Sox need him to continue to pitch well with some of their other starters struggling.
Mitch Talbot, Cleveland Indians: Where did this guy come from? I'm dubious that he can keep this up, but he's got a sub-3.00 ERA through five starts. His low strikeout rate could end up haunting him.
C.J. Wilson, Texas Rangers: Wilson made the transition from reliever to starter this past offseason, and it appears to be a move of genius by Texas. He's looked great in four of his five starts this season and is sporting a 1.65 ERA. He's got a pretty solid K rate, though his control seems to leave him at times.
Jaime Garcia, St. Louis Cardinals: Garcia has come out of basically nowhere to post three wins and a 1.13 ERA through five starts. Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan strikes again.
Livan Hernandez, Washington Nationals: For a guy that reportedly didn't even get a call back from the Nats at one point in the offseason, I'd say his sporting a sub-1.00 ERA through five starts qualifies as a surprise.
Brad Penny, St. Louis Cardinals: He's a first-half pitcher historically, but Dave Duncan just might be able to keep him going all season.
Mike Pelfry, New York Mets: Pelfry has been very good thus far in 2010, except for one bad start. The Mets really hope he can keep this up, as their rotation doesn't boast much depth after Johan Santana.
