How long is usually a Minor Leagues player's contract?
I dont really know how long a minor league player's contract is. I have baseball cards that show me there minor league stats, some are 3, some are 6, but mostly there 4.
Nearly all minor league contracts are signed for just one year. Some minor leaguers have major league contracts, but even those are typically year-to-year until they make the majors.
There are two types of minor league: affiliated minor leagues, and independent leagues.
Affiliate minor leagues are made up of teams affiliated with a major league club. The players on these teams are bound to the major league club that they originally signed with. The Major league organization owns the rights to that player until they have played six full minor league seasons. So the players do not have the option to sign with any minor league team when their one year contract expires. Once they have six years of experience they can opt to become minor league free agents and signe with whom ever they chose.
In the indpendent leagues, the players are not bound to any major league club, nearly all have one-year deals and can sign with any team following the season, though their may be rules within specific leagues about changing teams within the league.
The fact that players rarely spend more than a year or two with the same minor league team, has nothing to do with contract length. Players within a major league organization are assigned a minor league level, (rookie, short-season A, low-A, high-A, AA, AAA), so the player goes where the big league club tells them. Players are trying to work their way up through the system.
Also minor league franchises tend to move or change affiliations on occasion, so that also attributes to minor leaguers moving from team-to-team.
