How will the Pittsburgh Pirates do this year?
I think they'll do better than last year and possibly make a run at the pennant. The Cards are great, of course, but its a rather weak division from top to bottom. The Buccos made some good moves for a change (gettting Adam LaRoche) and I like Freddy Sanchez at second base. The outfiled will be good with Bay, Nady, and Duffy/Bautista. They just need to play ball like they did in the second half of 06.
Lineup: All-Stars Jason Bay and Freddy Sanchez anchor the middle of the order, and with Ronny Paulino emerging in the bottom third, Pittsburgh should get above-average production from at least three positions. Overall, however, the Bucs lack power, particularly from the left side. They also strike out too much and don't walk enough. Chris Duffy has tremendous speed and can jump-start the offense, but he's inconsistent.
Rotation: Youngsters Ian Snell, Zach Duke, Paul Maholm and Tom Gorzelanny pitched well after the All-Star break. Snell can be a dominant power pitcher if he becomes stronger mentally. Duke and Maholm need to throw strikes to be effective. Gorzelanny might have the best stuff on the staff.
Bullpen: The 'pen could rank among baseball's best. Mike Gonzalez, who was 24-for-24 in save opportunities in his first season as a closer, has the stuff and mentality to be a dominant stopper for years. Setup man Salomon Torres is among the most durable pitchers in the majors and can fill in if Gonzalez is injured again.
