How can anyone think the Juan Pierre signing is a good move?
So the Dodgers just threw $9m a year at a guy who has had OBPs of .326 and .330 the past two seasons, and who only scored 87 runs in the leadoff spot last season. But I keep reading here and on baseball forums that it was a good move? I know he can steal bases, but it's tough to do that when you're not reaching base.
Can someone explain how this is a good move?
Maybe if you had never seen him play, you might think it was a good move. Or, if you thought whiffing 38 times and walking 32 in the leadoff slot was good, you might think it was a good move. Or, if you think it's good for an outfielder to have a perfect (1.000) fielding percentage, you might think it's a good move (although I hasten to inform you that Carlos Lee posted a 1.000 fielding percentage in 2004, and he couldn't cover "Louie, Louie"). Or, if you knew absolutely nothing about baseball, had never seen a game, and had been living blindfolded in a cave in China with your eardrums punctured for the last seven years, you might think it's a good move. Or, if you're a Giants fan.
Even in this off-season's inflated market, giving $9 million to Pierre is ridiculous.
Then I look at OBP's for Dodger outfielders last year:

Drew, .393 (146)
Ethier, .365 (126)
Kemp, .289 (52)
Lofton, .360 (129)
Repko, .345 (69)
Yikes. I feel you. I know I wouldn't want him on my team.
