Despite their small payroll, the Minnesota Twins simply felt they couldn't afford to let the best catcher in the league walk out the door. The Twins recently signed Joe Mauer to an eight-year, $184 million contract extension that will keep one of the league's top players in Minnesota for much of his career, if not all of it. With such a big contract, it's a big victory for Mauer, of course, but it is also a huge win for the fans of a team that was recently targeted for contraction. The move will also ensure that <a href="http://www.stubhub.com/minnesota-twins-tickets/">Minnesota Twins tickets</a> will remain at a premium around Minneapolis.
For the Twins, signing Mauer wasn't simply on the wish list moving forward; it was a complete necessity. Mauer isn't only the best catcher in the game; he's also one of the game's overall best hitters, not to mention the reigning AL MVP. While many assumed that Mauer could be among the top hitters in terms of batting average since he was originally drafted, his development as a power hitter has caught nearly everyone by surprise. In a shortened season due to injury in 2009, Mauer hit 28 homeruns and drove in 96 runs while posting an absurd .365 batting average – a number unheard of for a catcher.
Mauer ensures that the Twins will have their one-two punch of Morneau and Mauer in the middle of their lineup for quite some time. Even with a smaller payroll than the most celebrated teams in the league, boasting two perennial MVP candidates in the heart of their lineup should maintain their overall competitive viability moving forward. Mauer also is renowned for handling pitchers very well, which should contribute to the development of younger pitchers and help them reach their potential in the big leagues.
But Mauer isn't simply a great player; he's also a symbol for the entire franchise. Mauer was drafted by the Minnesota Twins first overall in 2001 after playing his high school ball in St. Paul, Minn. In the contemporary sports scene, a franchise having a hometown hero as its biggest star is unbelievably rare, and if the Twins hadn't put up the big money to retain his services, it would have been a terrible blow to the entire organization. Though it is certainly a hefty contract, it should bring the type of long-term success for the franchise that will leave the previous talks of contraction in the distant past.
Perhaps most importantly, the contract extension also will allow the Twins to focus entirely on the upcoming season, which should have them in the middle of another hot divisional race. The Twins will also open their new stadium, Target Field, this April with Mauer as their poster boy and an exciting future ahead of them. Backed by Mauer and their state-of-the-art new stadium, the Twins are no longer one of the have-nots in Major League Baseball and have a great chance of being a competitor year in and year out.
Target Field is not as much of a hitters park as the Metrodome was, which could cut into Mauer's power numbers, but he is such a complete hitter that his overall effectiveness isn't likely to be diminished in any way. Under head coach Ron Gardenhire, the Twins have also been a team that stresses fundamentals above all else – a trait that will likely work to their advantage in a stadium where the ball won't carry as well as the Metrodome.
Regardless of the field, however, Mauer's signing proves that even the smaller teams in the league can compete when they build through the draft and choose carefully as to who they tie their futures to. Mauer has helped rejuvenate a franchise that was only recently on the brink of an abyss and it looks like he will maintain their prominence for many seasons following this one, making the signing not only a win for the Twins but for baseball as a whole.
