My Guinea Pig is Unhappy?
I have 3 male guinea pigs: Papa, Tony and Enzo. I have had Tony for about 4 months and he was really sweet at first, but over the past month he has become very aggressive. He bites (hard) almost every time I try to hold him and he chatters any time a human comes into the room. He has also been very aggressive toward Papa and Enzo, biting them to the point of bleeding. Obviously, I've separated him from the other pigs. He can still see them though, and sometimes he will nip at them through the bars. He has been separated for about a week now in a large cage with plenty of food, veggies, hay, toys and hiding spots. This seems to have helped his aggression, but he is just so unhappy. He never popcorns, he sleeps all day and he chatters at inanimate objects. I've taken him to the vet, and he's not sick. Is this just a phase guinea pigs go through? Is there anything I can do to make him happier?
I sounds like you just lucked out with introducing a male to other males. I have found a few times in the past that trios of male guinea pigs that aren't litter mates will sometime pair up and leave one as a sort of outcast. This usually went one of two ways either he became very submissive and tried to avoid all contact with the others, or he became like yours and became violently dominant. It is nothing you have done wrong it is just he can't find a comfortable place in the pecking order with the other 2 and even when he is on top he remains on the defensive at all times. Separating him as you have was wise as he will most probably continue to bring harm to the other two.Don't forget it takes a week for a Guinea Pig to settle into a new environment in the best of circumstances and with his recent stint of trying to be boss he will take a little longer to settle. It was really refreshing to read a question that actually reflected someone doing all that they can and asking about for advice. I would have thought that the vet would have checked his teeth when he had his health check so I doubt his biting the bars is anything to do with the length of his teeth. Another thing to consider is Guinea Pigs have a very healthy sense of smell so if the others are in the same room he may still be getting aggressive urges as a result of being able to smell them, a female Guinea Pig in season within smelling distance will make the most placid male pigs fight so with him still being able to sense the presence of the other 2 males he may still act out in some ways. Give him some space and make sure that he is totally removed from the presence of the other two and then approach getting him used to being handled and so on again. Biting is a form of communication and if a guinea pig feels the need to bite then you must identify what is upsetting him so much, I have a feeling it was his previous living arrangements. A pig that has been fighting will bite and lash out at almost anything so I think what you are seeing is either a left over from his previous housing with the other two and something he needs time to get over or possibly he can smell them still and is acting out to remind everyone he is still the boss. Give him a few more days where he is and if it hasn't improved move his cage totally away from the others. I have a VERY large male, longer and rounder than all my other pigs by a long way and he has to live alone as he hates sharing space, when I moved him it took a couple of weeks for him to calm down and after a month or so he has become one of the friendliest of the bunch
