Do you think Ron Guidry should be in the hall of fame?
He had one of the most dominate seasons ever for a pitcher in 1978 with and era of 1.74 and a whip under 1. He help the Yankees win 2 world series in 77 and 78. He has 5 gold gloves. And the Yankees officially retired his number. Why is still he not in the hall of fame?
What other players with a retired number will not be in the hof?
he was amazing especially during 78.
As talented as he was, he wasn't good enough, long enough. His window of greatness was limited. Even though he was 170-91 during his career, his numbers fall just a hair short. If he had won 200 or more games I'm sure he would have received much more serious consideration. After the 1985 season his last three seasons were very average.
On the other hand I believe that Don Mattingly belongs in the hall of fame. Not only was his offensive numbers great, he has to be considered one of the greatest defensive first basemen in history. It's too bad that he had so many back problems which cut his career short. He was well on his way to 3000 hits and would have been on the 1996 world champion Yankees and maybe more.
