Signed up with World Vision to sponsor a child, received photo of my girl in the mail, and I've seen it before?
I was sent a photo of a four year old girl and I know for certain I've seen this exact photo in a friend's home. What to do?
I'm entirely serious.
I'm pretty sure it's the real World Vision and not some scam, I've been donating to World Vision for years.
World Vision has been in the media for a while now with accusations of fraud. Most particularly in my memory is the story of a guy who was volunteering over sees through means of, basically, his own. He was approached one day by a representative from World Vision and asked if they could film some of what he was doing the next couple of days, and he agreed. They filmed very little of the guy himself and a lot of the area he was and the natives there. After they had finished they gave the guy $1000, which he said was never part of the agreement, but respectfully accepted it. They used the footage in an advertisement of projects they were "funding."
Another situation was with someone who sponsored a child and while volunteering in the country used her connections to find and meet the 16 year old girl. The girl had no idea she was being sponsored and claimed that the only thing she ever received from World Vision was a jacket and a pen.
I'm not saying that World Vision doesn't give your money to at least somewhat-worthy causes, but you should be warned... there are far better organizations to donate through that will ensure your money is going where they say it is going.
